DE SARTHE is pleased to present its participation in West Bund Art & Design 2024, with a curated exhibition of new and boundary-pushing works by artists Chan Ka Kiu, Hou Jianan, Lov-Lov, Lu Xinjian, Eugene Lun, Ma Sibo, Mak2, Caison Wang, and Zhong Wei. The featured artists represent an emerging art movement that contemplates the relationship between contemporary society and technology, wherein both are in constant and perpetual evolution.
DE SARTHE’s contemporary program is founded on the ethos that it is art’s responsibility to elucidate the pivotal factors that drive the transformations of time. A quarter into the 21st century, what was once cutting-edge technology is now an intrinsic part of the social landscape, ubiquitous in digital and physical spaces alike. From entertainment to education, virtual content and generative technology have become the basis of culture, resulting in the conception of a new cultural identity that is embodied and shared among the prevailing and upcoming generation of artists.
Hong Kong-based artist Eugene Lun (b.1998) investigates the invisible boundaries in daily life, set forth by the rigidity of social norms and niceties. His artworks are playful depictions of quotidian scenes that star himself as his alter-ego, [Cheong1][Cheong4]. Under Lun’s brush, ordinary settings are saturated and revitalized by his use of digital colors – an aesthetic reference to online visual culture that highlights the contrast between living in reality versus the virtual world. Lun further animates his works through the implementation of augmented reality, where in his alter-ego breaks free from both the stillness of the canvas and the constraints of real life.
